Could Red Sox trade for $56 million All-Star? image

Despite bringing in multiple All-Stars this offseason in Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman, the Boston Red Sox sit with a mere 10-10 record 20 games into the season.

Crochet has been great for the Red Sox through his first four games, going 2-1 with 28 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA in 26 innings pitched. Besides Crochet, Boston's starters have struggled this season. Boston's starting rotation has been plagued by injuries, leading to Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts and Sean Newcomb making more appearances early in the season.

The Red Sox luckily have pitchers like Brayan Bello set to return to the rotation soon, but they could be a logical team to make a trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara before the trade deadline, according to MassLive's Sean McAdam.

"For now, it would seem there are three areas of need: catching, a younger closer and, of course, more starting pitching," McAdam said. "One National League source said recently that the Red Sox stockpile of prospects and willingness to (again) add salary could well make them logical players for Sandy Alcantara."

"Indeed, if the Red Sox are contenders at the halfway point, the prospect of heading into the postseason with a 1-2 punch of Crochet and Alcantara is highly intriguing. That’s a long way off for now, however, by which time, surely some other theories and narratives will also have been proven false."

Alcántara is a two-time All-Star and former National League Cy Young Award winner. The 29-year-old is currently on a five-year, $56 million deal, according to Spotrac, and is under team control through the 2027 season. He would be a great addition for the Red Sox's starting rotation.
