Changes are a certainty at Real Madrid this summer as the club continues to reverberate from their UEFA Champions League exit.

A brutal quarterfinal defeat to Arsenal ended Los Blancos' chances of retaining their European crown with Carlo Ancelotti's position now under major pressure.

The veteran Italian coach is expected to see out the remainder of his contract in the Spanish capital but he is widely tipped to be moving on in June with Xabi Alonso the red-hot favourite to replace him at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti's present contract in Madrid runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, but club president Florentino Perez is seeking a fresh approach, and that could trigger Ancelotti's delayed move to take charge of the Brazil national team.

If the expected does happen, and Perez dispenses with Ancelotti, several players could follow the manager out of the door - regardless of whether they can overhaul Barcelona in the La Liga title race and Copa del Rey final.

As per reports from Diario AS, Perez has already decided against renewals for captain and vice-captain Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez as part of a squad update in the coming months.

The duo had both been offered the traditional Real Madrid 12-month extension for players aged 30+, but despite agreeing to those terms in years gone by, the end of the road now looks clear for two players who have given over a decade of service to Real Madrid's trophy-filled recent history.

The pair could sign short-term deals, to compete at this summer's FIFA Club World Cup, but their continuation beyond that looks increasingly uncertain.

Modric and Vazquez are not the only two names on Perez's departure list with defensive duo David Alaba and Fran Garcia - both out of contract in 2026 - also in the firing line.

David Alaba of Real Madrid

Alaba has struggled to regain full power following an ACL injury, with the Austria international targeted by Mikel Arteta in both games against the Gunners, and Garcia remains unconvincing as a left-back pick at the highest level.

Real Madrid could look to reach a salary settlement with both players, to allow them to leave for free, with Garcia expected to receive transfer interest from within La Liga.

Alaba could potentially retire - as he turns 33 in June - but Modric appears determined to play on beyond his 40th birthday in September as he strives to lead Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
