The San Francisco 49ers are looking to avoid more training camp holdouts in 2025, especially because the number-one player in question is their starting quarterback.
Brock Purdy was a godsend to the 49ers in 2022 and 2023, their playoff starting quarterback putting up top-of-the-league statistics on a minuscule salary. But assuming they still want him around, that salary will no longer be minuscule going forward.
Purdy is eligible for an extension this offseason, which is likely to cost the 49ers $50 million or more per season. There's room for debate on whether or not Purdy is actually worth that kind of money, but that's simply what it's going to take in today's market.
The two sides have been in contact all offseason, but there still seems to be a divide. Can the 49ers hammer out a deal soon?
On Tuesday, NFL.com insider Tom Pelissero gave a favorable update on Purdy, saying it was meaningful that the 25-year-old was choosing to participate in team activities despite the continued divide between himself and the San Francisco front office.
"What I would tell you on Purdy is they've been in negotiations, they have been in talks, they continue to move forward," Pelissero said during an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" Tuesday. "Purdy is there. He is working out with the team. He chose to be around, even though there's this ongoing situation involving his contract.

Sounds pretty positive, but Pelissero also offered a few brief words of caution.
"They're not close," Pelissero said. "Nothing's imminent, from my understanding here. But certainly this is a deal that I would anticipate that all parties have a vested interest in getting done before we get to training camp."
Training camp begins at the end of July. The regular season this year will begin on Sept. 4.
