Based on their hefty expectations, the New York Yankees are off to a somewhat uneven start. The team is currently sitting at 11-7 overall and in first place in the American League East. While that is by no means discouraging, this group has displayed a significant weakness during this period. Outside of Max Fried, the starting pitcher has been abysmal.
Carlos Rodon, Carlos Carrasco, and Will Warren all have ERAs over 5.00, and Marcus Stroman has struggled heavily so far this season. Some of these starters are likely not long-term fixtures in the rotation, as players like Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil return from injury. Schmidt is officially back, but the Yankees just received some unfortunate news on Gil.
According to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, who is nursing a strained lat, will need another 10 days before he resumes throwing activities. Therefore, it’ll be a reasonable amount of time before Gil is back on the mound after this mild setback.
Overall, the Yankees must be extremely cautious about this injury going forward. With Gerrit Cole out for the season, a player of Gil’s talent becomes even more crucial for this franchise’s World Series aspirations. The Yankees are treading water right now, but they need their starting pitching to take a considerable step up to become a legitimate title contender again.
