Last time Army beat Notre Dame: Revisiting the rare upsets in historic college football rivalry image

Army and Notre Dame will meet for the 52nd time Saturday. This is one of the longest-standing rivalries in college sports — though the term "rivalry" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, given Notre Dame's historical dominance.

The teams first matched up in 1913 at West Point in New York. But the teams haven't matched up lately; the Black Knights last played the Irish in 2016.

It's been even longer since Army picked up a win in the series. You must go back decades to find the last time the Black Knights prevailed over the Fighting Irish.

That doesn't mean they should be written off Saturday, though. Army enters at No. 19 in the nation and an undefeated 9-0. The Black Knights are still double-digit underdogs to the No. 6 Irish (9-1), but this could be their best chance to win the game in recent memory.

Below, Sporting News details the last time that Army beat Notre Dame in football.

Last time Army beat Notre Dame in football

Army and Notre Dame first played on Nov. 1, 1913. The first nine of their matchups over the next 10 years were all held in West Point.

The Black Knights first beat the Fighting Irish in 1914, 20-7. The wins have been few and far between since, though, as Army hasn't won over Notre Dame in more than 50 years.

The last time the Black Knights beat the Irish came on Saturday, Oct. 11, 1958. Army won, 14-2, in South Bend, but has lost the 15 matchups against Notre Dame since that day.

Not much information about the game has stood the test of time. We know that Terry Brennan was the head coach for the Irish, while Earl Blaik led the Black Knights. At the time of the game, the AP had Army ranked No. 3, with Notre Dame on their heels at No. 4.

Notre Dame vs. Army record

Army is 8-39-4 in the 51 meetings against Notre Dame. The Black Knights won in 1914, 1916, 1925, 1927, 1931, 1944, 1945 and in 1958.

Outside of four ties, the Irish have won every other game, including 15 in a row against the Black Knights.

Notre Dame vs. Army history

While the teams don't play as often these days, Army and Notre Dame squared off nearly every year from 1913 to 1947.
