Kylian Mbappe injury news, updates: Real Madrid star sweating El Clasico fitness after ankle sprain image

Real Madrid were humbled at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, as Arsenal came to their hallowed ground and snatched a 2-1 second leg victory. They advanced to the Champions League semifinals by a dominant 5-1 aggregate score while Los Blancos were sent packing.

The Premier League club managed to quiet Real Madrid's attacking stars throughout both legs, as only Vinicius Jr's consolation in the second half tainted the scoreline in Madrid's favor.

To make matters worse, Kylian Mbappe was forced off late in the second leg, unable to help Madrid's final, desperate push for an improbable turnaround.

The Sporting News has the latest on the French superstar's fitness, as he will be assessed for the stretch run with Real Madrid still looking to catch Barcelona in the La Liga title race, as well as an El Clasico matchup in the Copa del Rey final looming in two weeks.

Kylian Mbappe ankle injury latest news, reports

Unable to provide a lift for Real Madrid through most of the second leg against Arsenal at the Bernabeu, Kylian Mbappe was left in a heap on the turf after a hip-to-hip challenge with Declan Rice.

As both pressed for positioning on the loose ball, Mbappe appeared to land awkwardly on his right foot, twisting it in the wrong direction.

The 25-year-old was clearly in pain, and the cold spray would not provide enough relief for him to continue. Despite Real Madrid still searching for a late turnaround, Mbappe had no choice but to limp off in the 75th minute, replaced by Brahim Diaz.

Until further tests are conducted, it will be unclear how long Mbappe may find himself on the sideline. There has been some initial reporting, but all information in the immediate aftermath of the match should be taken with a grain of salt.

The first to report on his status shortly after the match was Miguel Angel Diaz of Madrid-based publication COPE. He claimed Mbappe's injury is a simple strain and not thought to be serious, and he could recover in time to return soon.

However, Jordi Gil of Spanish publication Sport have since reported that despite the fact it's not a truly serious injury, Mbappe's status for the Copa del Rey final is still in question. They confirmed he will miss the weekend game against Athletic Club in the immediate aftermath of the injury, as well as the visit to Getafe on the following Wednesday. That leaves the Copa del Rey final as the target for his return, but there are no guarantees.

Will Kylian Mbappe play in the Copa del Rey final?

While the La Liga title race is still up for grabs, Real Madrid's four-point deficit behind an in-form Barcelona has left a bigger spotlight on the Copa del Rey final in late April.

This title match will give Real Madrid its best chance to win a trophy this year, as the league race will require a late comeback to throw into real question.

Thus, Mbappe's participation in that match 10 days after his injury presents the most pressing question surrounding his upcoming availability.

If he fails to return for that trophy decider, the next big game that will be under the spotlight is another impending El Clasico meeting with Barcelona on May 11, this time in league action.
