Most college football national championships: Where Ohio State ranks in all-time NCAA titles after win over Notre Dame image

After a long college football season, a new national champion was crowned on Monday night.

Ohio State emerged victorious over Notre Dame after a 34-23 result, adding another trophy to its famed history and cementing its program as the first to win a title in the 12-team College Football Playoff era.

However, both the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish came into the matchup with extensive championship histories as two of the sport's most dominant powers for decades. Ohio State, with its win in the 2025 CFP national championship game, inched higher on the list of all-time titles by a college football team.

The Sporting News has you covered on where Ohio State and Notre Dame rank on the all-time national championships leaderboard following Monday's season-ending contest.

How many national championships does Ohio State have?

With this year's win, the Buckeyes are up to nine national titles in college football. That broke a tie with Harvard to put Ohio State in sole possession of seventh on the all-time list.

Prior to the 2025 title, Ohio State's last national title came in 2014. With Urban Meyer still as head coach, the team went 14-1 on the season, including a Big Ten championship. The Buckeyes punctuated the season with a victory over Oregon in what was the inaugural College Football Playoff.

How many national championships does Notre Dame have?

The Fighting Irish entered the 2025 CFP championship with 11 national titles in its history. That is the fourth-most among all programs.

Notre Dame has not won a national championship since the Lou Holtz era. The Irish legend led Notre Dame to the national championship in 1988, defeating West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl to help seal the recognition.

Most college football national championships

Both Notre Dame and Ohio State rank in the top 10 among programs with the most college football national championships. The Fighting Irish sit in fourth all-time with their 13 total, while the Buckeyes's nine titles are seventh, now ahead of Harvard.

However, the program with the most championships belongs to a member of the Ivy League — Yale. The Bulldogs have an impressive 18 titles in NCAA history, two more than Alabama for the lead. With that said, it's worth noting that Yale has not won a title in nearly century, with all 12 of those titles coming before 1930 and 14 of the championships occurring in the 1800s. Yale now plays at the FCS level and, like every other team in the Ivy League, has not been eligible for the FCS playoffs, though that will change next year.
