Jerry Jones has owned the Dallas Cowboys since 1989. He’s won three Super Bowls since, but “America’s Team” hasn’t been able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy since the end of the 1992 season. Pressure has continued to mount ever since.
The Cowboys have often gone for Hail Mary passes under Jones’ ownership, swinging for some of the biggest names available. Other times, they’re simply rumored to be interested in intriguing prospects without landing them, like Johnny Manziel in 2014.
Now, as the 2025 NFL Draft draws near, there’s an increased focus on who the Cowboys are hoping to select with the 12th overall pick in the first round.
The latest Cowboys draft report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini indicates Jones “really likes” University of Colorado wide receiver/cornerback prospect Travis Hunter. The only problem is, Hunter is widely viewed as a player who won’t fall outside of the top five selections when the first round of the draft kicks off on April 24.
“I’ve heard Jerry really likes Travis Hunter,” Russini said
“No way,” Chase Daniel responded. “That’s a very Dallas Cowboy move. They’re going to have to give up the farm, for a cornerback? They’re drafting 12.”
“Just because they like him doesn’t mean they’re going to do it,” Russini replied.
“Draft his next Prime, huh?” Daniel said.
“You never know,” Russini said.
Could Travis Hunter be Jerry Jones' new Deion Sanders?

While jumping into the top five of the NFL Draft never comes with a cheap price, it’s not that unreasonable for a team with the 12th pick, especially if the Cowboys are willing to make an aggressive offer.
Besides, out of all the prospects available, would any of them have as big an impact as Hunter, who can fill dual roles as a receiver and cornerback? First things first, there has to be another team willing to trade down. That could be tough to find when a generational talent like Hunter is available.
