How much does Roger Goodell make? Career earnings, net worth of NFL Commissioner image

Being in charge of the NFL is one of the biggest jobs in sports — and one Roger Goodell has owned since 2006.

The league's commissioner is in charge of overseeing all NFL operations, including business operations, player conduct, and representing the owners. Each year, fans spend the most time seeing Goodell at the NFL Draft, where he announces picks.

It certainly pays well to be the NFL's commissioner — but how much does Goodell really make?

Here's what to know about Goodell's contract, salary and more.

Roger Goodell contract details

Goodell is currently under contract with the NFL through March 2027. He signed a three-year extension in March 2023. Since taking on the role in 2006, he's signed four extensions.

"It really was quite simple, honestly," Goodell said of the extension in 2023, per ESPN. "It was just a matter of getting to it, frankly. It wasn't much of a discussion. It was pretty quick. I'm obviously honored to do this job."

Official figures on the deal weren't released, but it was "expected to be incentive-laden and, considering the league's financial success, the most lucrative deal ever given to any commissioner in any sport," according to ESPN. In the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, Goodell earned $63.9 million annually.

Goodell began his time with the NFL back in 1982 as an administrative intern.

Roger Goodell salary

Goodell's official salary isn't known, but he reportedly made $63.9 million back in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

Goodell also reportedly received a $200 million extension in 2017 that paid him $40 million annually, with most of the salary being in bonuses. Given the $40 million number in 2017 and $63.9 number as of 2021, Goodell's salary likely falls in that range.

Roger Goodell net worth

Roger Goodell has an estimated net worth of $250 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Roger Goodell career earnings

With Goodell's salaries often being undisclosed officially, there's no telling what his exact figure is in career earnings. But Front Office Sports reported in 2023 that his latest extension is expected to bring him to about $700 million in career earnings.

Goodell earned an estimated $500 million before his 2023 extension, the story reported, and the latest deal "could easily add another $200 million to that total haul."

Is Roger Goodell retiring?

With Goodell's contract running through March 2027, there are no expectations that he will be retiring as commissioner anytime soon.

Beyond then, it's uncertain whether he'll have interest in remaining the NFL's commissioner, as he's declined to speak on it before. ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. said on John Ourand's "The Varsity" podcast in February that he doesn't expect Goodell to retire in 2027.

“What I’ve heard is that he isn’t going anywhere,” Van Natta Jr. told Ourand. “Maybe that’s not surprising when you consider how much money he’s making and how good everything is going. . . . He’s enjoying the job. The business is almost on autopilot. I would be surprised if Roger retires after the conclusion of his current contract.”

How old is Roger Goodell?

Goodell is 66. He will turn 67 in February 2026.
