CO-OP LIVE, MANCHESTER — Defeat is not an option for Joe Joyce or Filip Hrgovic on Saturday night if they want to return to the top table of the heavyweight division.

Joyce (16-3, 15 KOs) and Hrgovic (17-1, 14 KOs) won silver and bronze respectively at the 2016 Olympic Games and, at various points since, have looked like the coming men in the professional ranks.

But back-to-back knockout losses to Zhilei Zhang in 2023 sent Joyce's stock tumbling. A defeat to the great survivor Derek Chisora last time out means he will have few appealing avenues left open at 39 years of age if he suffers a fourth career defeat tonight.

Hrgovic was fortunate to come through his own tough examination against Zhang but charted a careful course to the cusp of the IBF title, only to be stopped by Daniel Dubois last June. The 32-year-old Croatian took this assignment as late replacement for Dillian Whyte.

Dubois now holds a portion of the heavyweight title, having plotted his own phenomenal turnaround since suffering a sole career defeat to Joyce in 2020. That underlines how a fortune-shifting victory is often only just around the corner for a heavyweight who can bang, but neither of these destructive but flawed big men can afford another backwards step.

In the co-main event David Adelayde and Jeamie Tshikeva will contest the vacant British heavyweight title after an ill-tempered build-up, while British Olympian Delicious Orie makes his professional debut.
