Bathurst 1000: Race organisers considering late change due to safety concerns, report image

Race organisers are considering taking the unprecedented step of changing the start time of Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 due to safety concerns.

Already forced to ban fans from camping on the mountain and restricting crowds to 4,000 spectators per day due to COVID-19, officials are seriously considering another late alteration to this year’s race.

As first reported by News Corp Australia, the Supercars brass are becoming increasingly concerned over thunderstorms forecast to lash Mount Panorama on Sunday afternoon.

The ‘Great Race’ is currently scheduled to start at the traditional time of 11.30am (AEDT), which would see the winning car cross the finish line between 5.30pm and 6pm.

But officials are considering moving the start time forward by 30 minutes to 11am in the hope a winner can be crowned.

Under race rules, 81 of the 161-scheduled laps must be completed, otherwise the race will be abandoned.

More to come …
