Australia v India: India player ratings from Border-Gavaskar Trophy series image

India have produced one of the greatest performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history, winning the series 2-1 after a thrilling final Test match.

India looked set for a long Summer after they were dismissed for just 36 in the opening Test match, with leading batsmen and captain Virat Kohli on his way back home.

However, new skipper Ajinkya Rahane would lead from the front, helping them level the series in Melbourne.

What would follow would be two of the gutsiest performances by an Indian batting line-up in recent memory as they fought off the Australian attack to secure a draw in Sydney, followed by a famous victory in Brisbane.

With the series wrapped up and the trophy heading, Sporting News has compiled a player-by-player breakdown for all of the Indian players.

Border Gavaskar Trophy - India player ratings

Rohit Sharma - 6

Came into the side for the final two Test matches and provided some much need stability in the top order. Took the game to the Australians in the second innings in Sydney before being dismissed for 44 in the first innings in Brisbane. Caught everything that came to him in the slips.

Shubman Gill - 7.5

A breakout tour for Gill, who has solidified his spot at the top of the order after initially missing the first Test. The 21-year-old showed class beyond his years, highlighted by his 93 in the final innings at Brisbane, providing India with the platform to push for a famous win.

Cheteshwar Pujara - 9

The rock for India during the Test series, facing just under 1000 balls in his eight innings, seemingly taking half of those on the body. One of two Indians to play all four Tests and his presence at first drop was valuable for his side holding on for a draw in Sydney along with setting up the victory in Brisbane.

Ajinkya Rahane (c) - 8.5

With India seemingly at its lowest point after Adelaide, the new skipper stepped up and turned around their fortunes with a marvellous hundred at the MCG. His captaincy and ability to lift a wounded Indian side will have many calling for him to retain the role when Kohli returns after securing the unlikeliness of series victories.

Mayank Agarwal - 4

Struggled in the first two Test matches as opener, Agarwal was eventually recalled and slotted into the middle-order for the final game as injuries mounted. Saved his best innings for the last match with a solid 38 but will struggle to hold onto his spot after his lacklustre second inning and the emergence of Gill, Pant and co.

Rishabh Pant - 8.5

Initially overlooked for the first Test match, Pant's spot in the middle-order has been secured following a breakout tour of Australia. Pant's aggressive inning of 97 in Sydney helped take the pressure of the rest of the line-up, putting them in the position to bat out the draw. He then produced one of the finest innings of the past decade, smashing India to a famous victory at the Gabba.

Washington Sundar - 6.5

Brought in for Ashwin on debut for the final Test match and he was one of their best during the victory. Managed to take the prized wicket of Smith as his first Test scalp before putting together a solid fifty after a mini-collapse in the first inning. Will be disappointed that he couldn't finish the job in the second innings.

Shardul Thakur - 7

Like Sundar, was a late inclusion for the final match and managed to turn the game with both bat and ball. Thakur high-scored with 67 in his lone inning of the series along with taking four wickets in the second innings. Fell with just three runs remaining in the chase.

Navdeep Saini - 5

Featured in the final two Test match, taking four wickets in the SCG Test. Struggled in Brisbane after an apparent groin injury in the first inning but managed to return in the second with little luck.

Mohammed Siraj - 7.5

Having come into the side in Melbourne, he quickly became the leader of the pack in Brisbane after the loss of Ashwin and Bumrah. He immediately lifted with the added responsibility, taking his maiden five-wicket haul in the first innings.

Thangarasu Natarajan - 5.5

Natarajan started the tour as a net bowler before a series of injuries handed him his debut in Brisbane. Managed to take three wickets, including the centurion Labuschagne, a massive boost for his confidence.

Virat Kohli (c) - 4

In his lone Test of the series, Kohli looked set to bring up his hundred before he was run out by Rahane/Hazlewood. Took a good catch to dismiss Green but would find himself out for 4 as India collapsed in the second innings.

Jasprit Bumrah - 8

Spearheaded the Indian attack for the majority of the series, giving the Australian batters' some serious nightmares. Produced a lethal spell of bowling to help dismiss Australia for under 200 at the MCG, setting up victory. Missed the last Test of the series with an abdominal injury.

Ravichandran Ashwin - 8

Ashwin got the better of his spinning rival Lyon, taking more wickets despite playing less games. He seemed to trouble the likes of Smith early on in the series, taking crucial wickets when needed. He capped this off with an inspirational period of batting at the SCG, surviving for over 40 overs to help secure a draw despite a serious back injury.

Hanuma Vihari - 5

Struggled throughout the series, failing to get past 30 in five innings. However, he earns a pass mark following his incredible partnership with Ashwin to save the SCG Test with an injured hamstring, lasting over 150 balls and two hours.

Ravindra Jadeja - 7

Featured in just two Test matches but contributed significantly with both bat and ball. Played a stylish 50 in Melbourne to help India into a dominant position along with two second-innings wickets. He was the pick of bowlers in Sydney, taking four wickets to go with a freak run-out of Steve Smith before injuring his thumb.

Prithvi Shaw - 1

Struggled to handle the pace of Starc, dismissed for a second-ball duck. Managed to avoid the pair but failed to survive late on day two as he was bowled by Cummins for 4. Was figured out by the Australians and subsequently dropped for the second Test match.

Umesh Yadav - 4

Yadav was one of the shining lights from the Adelaide Test for India, taking three wickets. However, his tour was brought to an abrupt end after a calf injury during the Boxing Day Test.

Mohammed Shami - 2

Failed to take a wicket during the first innings. Was dismissed for a golden duck in the first innings before having to retire hurt in the second after suffering a blow to his arm, sidelining him for the rest of the series.

Wriddhiman Saha - 2

Played just one Test match in Adelaide and struggled with both bat and gloves. Managed just 13 runs in two innings and was replaced by Pant for the rest of the series.
