UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria headlined the UFC 308 this past weekend against BMF champion Max Holloway. The highly anticipated matchup promised to keep fans on the edge of their seats considering the explosiveness of the champion.
As far as the fight goes, it lived up to the expectations as Topuria put on a statement by becoming the first man to knockout Holloway. As he made his first successful title defense, the question about his next fight quickly emerged. While potential matchups against Sean O'Malley and Islam Makhachev seemed like a possibility, Dana White was quick to shrug them off.
While speaking about Topuria's next fight inside the Octagon, the UFC president suggested that Alexander Volkanovski would be the one next in line. During the post-fight press conference, he said:
“Listen, Volkanovski’s one of those guys, we’re not going to say no to Volkanovski. He’s been that guy for us. Any time we needed him. He was on this run like [Israel] Adesanya, like Alex [Pereira] is on right now, when things don’t go our way, and you’ve got to call a guy, Volkanovski’s always been that guy. He really was. I don’t think anybody’s in this room going ‘oh this is ridiculous or crazy’ and who wouldn’t want to see it again?”
