India's history at the Olympic games goes back to the year 1900, during their pre-independence era under the British rule.

It was Norman Pritchard who had kicked-off the country's medal tally at the Olympics in 1900, by winning two silver medals in athletics. Consequently, India became the first ever Asian nation to win an Olympic medal.

India, a country of 1.5 billion have been making remarkable strides at the events from field hockey to wrestling and badminton, over the years. 

In this article, The Sporting News looks at the list of sport events in which India has had the most success.

In which sport has India won most Olympic medals?

Ahead of the start of the Paris Olympics 2024 games, we look at the sporting events in which India has won the most medals at the Olympic games.

It will be of no surprise that field hockey is the country's most successful sport at the Olympics. They have won 8 gold medals in this sport, dominating the event between the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, where they won their eight-gold medal.

Post-independence India's first individual medal was won by wrestler KD Jadhav at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. And it took 56 more years for India to win another medal in wrestling, when Sushil Kumar won it in 2008. Sakshi Malik is the only woman to have won a medal in wrestling at the Olympics for India thus far.
