India's 470 crores funding for Olympics: Which sport received the most money for Paris 2024 and how did they perform?

Ahead of the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics, there was a lot of optimism among Indian fans about the country's chances at the summer games.

After finishing with a tally of seven medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, it was expected that India would not only replicate their previous best performance but also better it, as there was a remarkable increase in funding and support for the athletes in recent years, from both the government and the sporting bodies.

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of India (GOI), 470 Crores were set aside to just fund the athletes' participation and for other expenses at the Paris games. 

However, the Paris 2024 games has been a disappointment as the 117-memeber contingent of athletes have so far produced just five medals, four bronze, one silver and no gold.

It looks highly unlikely that India will meet its set expectations or even surpass the medal tally of seven, which was set in the last edition of the Olympic games.

470 crores funding: How much did each sport receive and what was their performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics?

With three medals to its name, shooting was India's best performing sport, followed by Hockey, which has now produced back-to-back bronze medals in consecutive Olympic games.

The Odisha government have been sponsoring and offering financial support to the sport of hockey since 2018, with them recently extending the sponsorship contract up to the year 2036.

Badminton, with zero medals, has produced the most disappointing results at the Paris games for India, with stars like PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who were considered favourites for a podium finish, failing to win a single medal.

Athletics which received the most funding of 96.08 Cr consisted of close to 30 athletes, unlike badminton which had seven athletes, but with a funding of 72.03 Cr. That said, it was also a disappointing result for India at the track and field events, with only Neeraj Chopra in Men's javelin throw delivering, with a silver medal finish.
