Ravichandran Ashwin has had a revelation in his role as a cricketer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. The off-spinner has had a change in role this season, with his emergence as a middle-order batter, whenever needed due to his all-round abilities.

The Tamil-Nadu bowler, who was picked by RR at the mega auction 2022, has had his say about the in-trend 'impact player' rule in the Indian Premier League. The rule was brought into effect from IPL 2023 and has had its own criticisms/support.

What is the Impact Player Rule?

As per the rule, the teams are allowed to make one substitution, depending on the match circumstances. One player from the initial playing XI will be substituted to the bench for the rest of the match. The impact player will have the chance to 'impact' the match, in place of the outgoing player.

One downside of the impact player rule has been the diminishing need for part-time all-rounders. For your reference, the likes of Shivam Dube, who would be used as a part-time bowler otherwise, is now used as a specialist batter. Dube has sat out for most of the season when CSK have come out to bowl.

Recently, Ravi Ashwin spoke to presenter Akash Chopra, on the impact player rule.

What did Ravi Ashwin say about the impact player rule?

Ravi Ashwin stated how the impact player has not made much difference in the IPL. Even without the specialised rule, Ashwin believes that the batsman's confidence has grown up, apart from the external factors that have supported the batters in the ongoing IPL.

I do not want to commit. In my opinion, even if the Impact Player rule was not implemented, the high scores (as seen in IPL 2025) would have been achieved. The batsman's confidence has shot up, and the pitches used at different venues, have all been standardised now, Ashwin spoke on the not-so widely-adapted impact player rule.

Ashwin also stated that the bowlers will have to turn themselves into capable ball-hitters, in the coming years. The modern-day game is evolving, and the bowlers will have to live and evolve with it, as per Ravi Ashwin.

In the coming years, even us bowlers will have to hit sixes. The bowler will know that no matter how I bowl, I will have to bat. The game is moving in that direction, and we will have to adapt with it, Ravi Ashwin stated in a post-match chat with Akash Chopra.
