Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that Pakistan cricket needs a significant shift in its coaching approach.

After a string of poor performances, particularly in the recent T20 World Cup and a series loss to Bangladesh, Kaneria suggested that the national team needs a coach with a tough, no-nonsense attitude – someone like India’s Gautam Gambhir.

His call comes as Pakistan struggles both on and off the field, despite recent changes in the coaching staff.

Why does Danish Kaneria believe Pakistan needs a tough coach?

Kaneria is convinced that the solution to Pakistan’s cricketing woes lies in stronger leadership and decision-making. He criticized the current culture of constant changes in captaincy, which he believes destabilizes the team.

"Everything is taken for granted; that's why the downfall of Pakistan cricket has gone through making captains, changing captains. That will not work," Kaneria said in an interview with Republic.

Kaneria emphasized that once a captain is appointed, they should be given full support and a year to prove themselves before any drastic changes are made.

"Okay, I have made him the captain for one year. I will ask him. I will ask him to give me an answer after one year. Nobody will touch him you have full support from me, but you need to perform. If you don't perform, you go out, so that's the thing you have to make tough decisions. Why, if you don't make tough decisions, things will not work," added Kaneria.

How could Gautam Gambhir's style benefit Pakistan?

Kaneria drew a comparison with Gautam Gambhir, who is known for his blunt, straightforward coaching style. He pointed out that India's success, in part, has been driven by coaches like Gambhir, who address issues directly rather than beating around the bush.

"Why today other teams are doing so well Why is the Indian team is doing so well? They had a Rahul Dravid who worked with the team very well now they have Gautham Gambir, a fantastic cricketer and fantastic guy," said Kaneria.

"The way he reacts, he tells on the face. He doesn't go back and do backbiting; he's on the face straight away. This is how you have to be. You have to be strong, and like a strong person, you have to make the decision on the face, not at the back,” added Kaneria.
