Morne Morkel has stepped into his role as India's new bowling coach, with his first challenge being the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.

The former South African pacer led India's practice session in Chennai, where he outlined his vision and praised the team's senior players, stating how their leadership would be crucial in his tenure.

What are Morkel’s immediate goals as India’s bowling coach?

During his first interaction with the media since taking over the role, Morkel expressed his optimism about India's established setup. He emphasized his aim to preserve the team’s current strengths while working on small improvements to improve performance.

“Coming here, this is a setup that operates by itself. To protect that and make it better in small ways is going to be the goal,” Morkel told reporters.

Reflecting on the team’s experienced senior players, Morkel credited their leadership, which he believes will be leading the charge.

“When I was sitting in the plane, I reflected that we are so lucky to have quality senior players and they will lead the charge, Our responsibility is to support them and give them the best sort of advice that we can give,” he remarked.

How will Morne Morkel’s experience help India?

Morkel brings valuable experience, both as a player and coach, to his new role. With over 247 international appearances and multiple IPL seasons under his belt, he’s well-acquainted with the playing conditions and pressure involved in Indian cricket.

Morkel also worked with the Lucknow Super Giants as a coach, forging relationships with key Indian players and coaches, including head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Morkel hopes these pre-existing connections will facilitate better communication and trust as he takes on the responsibility of nurturing India’s talented bowlers. 

“I have played a lot against some of the players, I have seen and connected a little bit with some of the guys during the IPL. To be now in the camp and form friendships and relationships is very important," said the South African.

“Today's goal was to get an understanding of the guys, their strengths and weaknesses, and help them with planting those seeds for goals for the upcoming series. That's the sort of conversation we had today,” he added.

What next for Morne Morkel?

The former fast bowler's first assignment as India coach will be the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh which start on September 19 in Chennai.
