The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for potential changes in 2025, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering increasing the number of matches from 74 to 84. This proposal has sparked discussions among various stakeholders.

Since the introduction of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, the IPL has included 74 matches per season. Before that, the league featured 60 games. The shift to 84 matches could offer more opportunities but might also impact player fatigue and scheduling.

What did Jay Shah say on IPL expansion?

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently addressed the topic, hinting that the IPL might expand to 84 games. Speaking with the Times of India, Shah said that the final decision will depend on several factors.

"Nothing is confirmed. We will collectively decide. We also have to factor in the workload of the players and the window also. It's in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide," he said.

Shah has expressed confidence in the potential for new bidders for IPL media rights, which could bring fresh perspectives and competition. He also highlighted the BCCI's ongoing efforts to enhance cricket infrastructure, including new facilities and stadiums.

How did the stakeholders react?

The idea of expanding the IPL has met with mixed reactions. Sources suggest that broadcasters Star India and Viacom18 prefer to keep the league at 74 matches.

They worry that a longer season might lead to viewer fatigue and reduced advertising revenue. On the other hand, franchises are advocating for the 84-match format, believing it would increase their revenue potential.

As for the mega-auction for IPL players, Shah said that opinions are divided among franchises. Some support a mega-auction to rebuild their teams, while others prefer maintaining their current squads. The BCCI will consider these views before making a final decision.

While the possibility of expanding the IPL to 84 matches is on the table, the BCCI is carefully weighing its options. The outcome will depend on balancing player workloads, stakeholder interests, and financial implications.
