Afghanistan defeated South Africa for just the second time in any format, both wins coming in the first two ODIs of the three-match ODI series in Sharjah, as they secured a historic series victory against the Proteas.

The two sides are currently playing their first ever bilateral series. Afghanistan, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi's 4/37, dismantled the Proteas for just 106 in the 1st ODI and then bowled them out for 134 runs defending a target of 312 in the 2nd ODI.

After securing the series 2-0 in the 3-match ODI series against South Africa, Afghanistan have now beaten two major teams in a bilateral series.

The two wins came against South Africa in the ongoing 2024 series at Sharjah and against Bangladesh in 2023 when they won the three-game series 2-1. Afghanistan won the first two games in Chattogram before losing the third match. 

They have also beaten the likes of Ireland, Scotland and Zimbabwe in bilateral ODI series but have never won against a top side.
