Shreyas Iyer’s struggle in the 2024 Duleep Trophy continued as he recorded a five-ball duck in India D’s third-round encounter against India B.

The batter has been unable to regain form, leaving his future in India's Test squad in serious doubt. The failure to deliver in this tournament might close the door on his chances of making it back to the Indian side anytime soon.

Duleep Trophy: How many runs did Shreyas Iyer score in India D vs India B clash?

On Day 1 at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Iyer walked in with India D well-placed at 172/3, following an impressive start by openers Devdutt Padikkal and Srikar Bharat, who added 105 runs together.

However, Iyer’s stay at the crease was short-lived, as he was dismissed for a five-ball duck by leg spinner Rahul Chahar in the 49th over. This latest failure adds to the growing list of disappointing outings for the batter in the ongoing tournament.

Will Iyer feature in India’s upcoming Test matches?

The middle-order batter was already left out of India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh and is not expected to feature in the five-match Test series against Australia either.

While Iyer may still have opportunities in domestic cricket, including the Irani Cup, reports suggest that his chances of playing in India’s next Test assignments are slim.

Once a promising talent with a memorable debut century in 2021, Iyer has since been plagued by issues with short-pitched deliveries, a known weakness that has been exploited by opponents.

His failure to impress in the Duleep Trophy tournament makes it increasingly unlikely that he will be considered for the Indian Test squad in the near future.
