In today’s story with The Sporting News, we take a look at the five players to watch out for ahead of the start of the competition.

Five players to watch out for at the Duleep Trophy 2024

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav has been in top form for the Indian team since his appointment as the new skipper of the T20I side. He was impressive with his leadership skills in the T20I series against Sri Lanka which also marked new head coach Gautam Gambhir’s debut with the Indian team.

The Men in Blue cruised to a stunning 3-0 series win in Surya’s debut series as full-time captain of the side. However, the 33-year-old is yet to become a regular in the Indian Test side having featured in just a single game yet. The Duleep Trophy serves as the perfect platform for SKY to showcase his skills in Test cricket. The player recently claimed that foresees himself as an all-format cricketer.

It would be interesting to watch how Surya adapts to Test cricket and if he keeps up with his similar explosive style that he has shown in T20I and ODI cricket. SKY will be playing for Team C under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Rishabh Pant

India’s star wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant marked a stunning return to the Indian side ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Pant initially made his return to professional cricket with the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024 after his unfortunate accident in December 2022.

After racking up impressive numbers in the two-month-long competition, earning a place in the squad for the T20 World Cup. Pant played an important role in India’s monumental triumph at the competition.

Preceding his accident, Pant was an important cog in India’s test team, however, the incident has kept the player away from tests since then. The 2024 Duleep Trophy will serve as an important tournament for the 26-year-old in his aim to get his place back into the side.

KL Rahul

At one point in time, KL  Rahul seemed to be India’s permanent solution in the opening alongside Rohit Sharma in Tests. However, terrific performances by players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubhman Gill recently have resulted in Rahul losing his place despite having played 50 Tests for the Indian side.

Rahul will be aiming at a red-ball comeback with a strong performance at the 2024 Duleep Trophy. The 32-year-old has an impressive away record with overseas centuries against both South Africa and England.

Rahul is not new to the format, providing him with a brilliant opportunity to make it big in the tournament.

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan has been on a downward spiral for quite some time now after being dropped from the Indian side due to massive competition in the top order. His below-par performances in the IPL 2024 season with the Mumbai Indians (MI) have made his case further worse.

Kishan will be aiming for redemption in the 2024 Duleep Trophy. The tournament could prove to be a turning point in the youngster’s career, probably marking the start of a great comeback back into the main team.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer recently marked his return back into the ODI side in the series against Sri Lanka. Although Iyer failed to impress in the tournament as India went down 2-0, Iyer has the confidence of the coach Gautam Gambhir.

The 29-year-old batter led IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a brilliant season in the 2024 campaign with Gambhir as mentor of the side.

Although Gambhir seems to be confident about the player, Iyer will have to deliver in the upcoming Duleep Trophy to cement his place in the Test side.
