Indian administrator Jay Shah was announced as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this week. The honourable secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made the big switch and now will sit at the apex chair.

Shah, who has been associated with the sport for over 15 years, has now reached the zenith of all organisational levels in cricket. Replacing the incumbent Greg Barclay, the Indian will assume his new role from December 1, 2024.

Jay Shah was elected unopposed by the existing chair to become the youngest ICC chairman, having no other candidate as his opponent.

Did Pakistan Cricket Board vote for Jay Shah?

Per News18, the Pakistan Cricket Board abstained from casting their vote. A total of 16 members were a part of the election process for the new ICC chairman.

While PCB remained silent throughout the process, heavyweights like, ECB, CA and West Indies Cricket Board wholeheartedly supported the Indian administrator.

"There wasn’t any word from PCB. Not that it was required because Shah had overwhelming support from the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator during the entire process," a source close to News18 informed.

What will be Jay Shah's first major ICC event as chairman?

Jay Shah's first major ICC event as a chairman would be the return of ICC's 50-over event, Champions Trophy.

The event is scheduled to be held in Pakistan, as the country hosts an ICC event for the first time since the 1996 ODI World Cup.

Shah has been an advocate of the hybrid model of conducting competitions and it was under his chairmanship in the Asian Cricket Council that the 2023 Asia Cup was conducted in such a manner where Sri Lanka and Pakistan jointly hosted the competition.

There is a strong possibility that Shah would recommend organising the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE with Pakistan playing all their matches at their home except for the India clash which will be held in UAE.
