Attack on Mashrafe Mortaza’s house

Amid the turmoil, the house of former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza was attacked and set on fire. According to The Dhaka Tribune, a mob targeted Mortaza’s residence in the Narail constituency of the Khulna District in the southwestern part of the country.

The attack is part of a broader wave of violence against properties linked to ruling party members.

What were the reasons behind the attack on Mashrafe Mortaza’s house?

Mortaza’s house was targeted because of his political affiliation. He has served as a Member of Parliament for the Narail-2 constituency since 2019 and was re-elected in the 2024 general elections. His association with the Awami League made him a target during the recent unrest.

Mashrafe Mortaza is widely regarded as the greatest captain in the history of Bangladesh cricket. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh won 50 out of 88 ODI matches. This makes him the most successful ODI captain for Bangladesh.

As a pace bowler, Mortaza has taken 389 wickets across all formats. This is second only to Shakib Al Hasan among Bangladeshi bowlers.

Mortaza also contributed runs as a lower-order batter. He has scored 2955 runs in 6 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.
