Why is ICC shifting the venues for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024?

The political situation in Bangladesh has created an environment of high tension in the nation. The resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin led to a major collapse across the nation, which has in turn led to violent incidents taking place.

Former Bangladesh skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza wasn’t spared either as a mob attacked his house. Mortaza was a member of the party that Sheikh Hasina belonged to, the Awami League party. Even BCB chairman, Nazmul Hussein was reported missing under the highly strenuous condition the country has been put under.

Amid such chaos, it would have been very difficult for Bangladesh to host the tournament in such a short time. Nations like England, India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. have even put restrictions on their citizens to travel to the nation.

In an official statement, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said,

It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event. I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.

I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026.

Where will the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 be played?

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to be shifted to UAE. In 2021, UAE hosted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup wherein Australia managed to win their maiden title by defeating New Zealand in the final.

Coincidentally, the Australian Women’s team will be defending their T20 World Cup win from 2023 in UAE.
