It was a historic day for Indian boxing as Deepak Bhoria (51kg), Hussamuddin (57kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) progressed into the semifinals, hence ensuring a medal each, in the ongoing IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. 

This is for the first time that Indian men's boxers will return with three medals from the World Boxing Championships.

Earlier, in 2019,  Manish Kaushik and Amit Panghal finished on the podium which was the best finish for the country until now. 

What happened today at World Boxing Championships?

In the first quarter-final bout of the day, Deepak defeated Diushebaev Nurzhigit of Kyrgyzstan by a 5-0 unanimous decision to qualify for the semis.

Meanwhile, Hussamuddin beat J. Diaz Ibanez of Bulgaria by a 4-3 split decision to progress into the last four. It was a closely fought battle and the Indian southpaw used his speed and movement to defend and counter-attacked to gain advantage. He will next face Saidel Horta of Cuba in the semi-finals on Friday.

Whereas, Dev beat Jorge Cuellar Of Cuba by a 5-0 unanimous decision to secure the third medal of the day for India. The pugilist was brisk in his movements and punched with precision to take advantage right from the first round. He kept up his tempo in the next two rounds as well to ensure at least a bronze medal for him. 

Dev faces a tough challenge against Asian champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals on Friday.

How many medals have India won in the history of the Boxing World Championships?

India have won 10 medals so far at the World Championships. Amit Phangal remains the only boxer to win silver and the rest have won Bronze. 

However, Deepak Bhori, Hussamuddin and Nishant Dev can take a step further and still create history.
