Edgar Berlanga vs Jason Quigley undercard: Complete list of fights before main event in 2023 boxing match image

New Matchroom Boxing signing Edgar Berlanga has said he feels "reborn" as he prepares to make his debut for the promotion when he faces Jason Quigley on June 24 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater.

"I want this night to be historic for my fans and for all the people of Puerto Rico," said the Brooklyn-based 26-year-old, predicting that the crowd would "witness greatness" from him.

A heavyweight bout featuring Adam Kownacki, a former winner of New York's Golden Gloves competition, is part of an undercard containing six scheduled fights before the headliners enter the ring.

Kownacki and opponent Joe Cusumano have produced a combined 34 knockouts in 41 fights during their professional careers, while Dakota 'Lone Wolf' Linger, who takes on unbeaten Reshat Mati, was at the centre of plenty of social media attention for his stoppage of Jesue Vargas in June 2022.

Albanian Mati will be a home fighter because he is based on Staten Island. "I will have huge support from my Albanian fanbase and I’ll definitely look to make a statement that night in the 140lb division," he said.

Here is a complete guide to the undercard for Berlanga vs. Quigley, including the weight divisions, records and backgrounds of the boxers hoping to shine.

Edgar Berlanga vs. Jason Quigley undercard

Adam Kownacki vs. Joe Cusumano

  • Division/Weight: Heavyweight
  • Kownacki record: 20-3
  • Cusumano record: 21-4
  • Belts at stake: N/A

Poland's Kownacki says he needs to "resurrect" his reputation after three straight defeats, starting with successive knockout losses to Robert Helenius in 2020 and 2021 which ended his unbeaten record from the first 20 fights of his career.

The 34-year-old, known as 'Babyface', also lost a 10-rounder against Ali Eren Demirezen in 2022. He is a year younger than American Cusumano, who has won his last two bouts early but has not fought since 2022 and suffered a first-round knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois the previous year. "Adam is a tough fighter but I'm preparing for war," said Cusumano.

Reshat Mati vs. Dakota Linger

  • Division/Weight: Super lightweight
  • Mati record: 13-0
  • Linger record: 13-5-3
  • Belts at stake: N/A

With a nickname of 'The Albanian Bear', Mati is a 24-year-old former kickboxing champion who won a version of a WBC belt with his fourth points win in a row when he beat Eduardo Leonel Rodriguez in Mexico City in October 2022.

Linger's profile rose considerably when he viciously stopped Vargas for his first win in two-and-a-half-years and four fights, earning only his third victory in nine with a considerable upset against an opponent who was reeling against the ropes and should have been saved by the referee earlier, some viewers and the ringside doctors felt.

Yankiel Rivera vs. Christian Robles

  • Division/Weight: Flyweight
  • Rivera record: 3-0
  • Robles record: 8-0
  • Belts at stake: N/A

2020 Olympic Games flyweight Rivera is a Puerto Rican and a former medalist at the Pan American Games and Central American and Caribbean Games. The 25-year-old won his first two professional fights by knockout before beating Fernando Diaz on points at Madison Square Garden in February.

Mexican Robles has been nurtured at legendary trainer Freddie Roach's Wild Card gym in California, with his last three fights in the state. Three of the 26-year-old's eight wins have been knockouts.

Khalil Coe vs. Buneet Bisla

  • Division/Weight: Light heavyweight
  • Coe record: 5-0-1
  • Bisla record: 7-0
  • Belts at stake: N/A

Jersey City prospect Coe brings knockout power to his debut at light heavyweight, having previously stopped 2016 Olympic Games gold medalist Julio Cesar La Cruz in June 2018 and, in April, produced a spectacular uppercut to beat late replacement James Quiter.

In a meeting of two unbeaten fighters, Coe now faces Canadian Bisla, who has been a regional and national champion at super middleweight and light heavyweight. Bisla says he is the first Punjabi to fight at Madison Square Garden and is describing himself as "beyond ready".

Harley Mederos vs. Pedro Vicente Scharbaai

  • Division/Weight: Lightweight
  • Mederos record: 5-0
  • Scharbaai record: 7-5-1
  • Belts at stake: N/A

Another exciting Brooklynite on the show, Mederos has won all but one of his bouts by knockout. The latest of those came at the Hulu in February, when he became the first fighter to stop Mexican opponent Julio Madera.

The 23-year-old will now fight a man 11 years his senior in Vicente, a Puerto Rican with defeats in his three most recent fights, the last of which was a wide decision loss to Marc Castro on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol's bout with Canelo Alvarez in May 2022.

Pablo Valdez vs. Demian Daniel Fernandez

  • Division/Weight: Welterweight
  • Valdez record: 6-0
  • Fernandez record: 14-4
  • Belts at stake: N/A

Four knockdowns in the fourth round gave New Yorker Valdez victory over Julio Cesar Sanchez at Madison Square Garden at the end of 2021, taking him to five career knockouts. Valdez turned pro at the age of 35 in 2018, and he dropped Noe Alejandro Lopez three times in his last fight.

Argentinian Fernandez has lost by knockout in three of his last five fights, starting with a defeat to current IBF interim welterweight champion Jaron Ennis. He then failed to win an IBF Latino belt and was stopped by Brian Norman Jr in the first round in Atlanta in 2021, but he returned to beat Claudio Andres Luquez on points in September 2022.
