Liverpool will hope to put the weekend's heartbreaker against Tottenham behind them as they host Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise in Europa League group stage play on Thursday.

The Reds were reduced to nine men against Spurs and conceded a late gut punch to fall 2-1, but refereeing decisions were the talk of the match as they were denied an early decisive goal on a calamitous VAR error.

Now, sitting top of Group E after topping LASK in their European opener, they welcome their Belgian opponents to Anfield expecting a tough match. Union Saint-Gilloise sit top of the Jupiler Pro League after nine matches, level with Gent on points and goal differential but ahead on the goals scored tiebreaker.

Needing an emotional pick-me-up, the Reds will hope to lurch back into Premier League action on a high note and put the events of the previous weekend behind them.

Liverpool vs Union Saint-Gilloise lineups & team news

The only Liverpool players definitely missing for this match are Thiago Alcantara and Cody Gakpo, who are out injured. Thiago is working his way back from a hip injury but will need a few more weeks, while Gakpo suffered a knee injury in the process of scoring his goal against Tottenham over the weekend.

Midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is suffering from a "tiny little calf injury" according to Jurgen Klopp, and he's unlikely to take part as they play it safe with the youngster.

Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota are both suspended for Premier League action over the weekend, meaning they were likely to be involved here before being rotated out of necessity in the coming matches. However, while Jota starts, Curtis Jones is only on the bench, with Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch in midfield from the start.

Liverpool starting lineup (4-3-3): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Konate, Tsimikas — Endo, Gravenberch, Elliott — Salah, Jota, Nunez.

Union Saint-Gilloise will be missing former Borussia Monchengladbach striker Dennis Eckert, who has a knock.

The status of goalkeeper and captain Anthony Moris was uncertain after he was withdrawn from Sunday's 3-1 league victory over Charleroi, but he returns to start today. Also forced off due to injury was right-back Guillaume Francois and he is sidelined for this game.

The brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, Kevin Mac Allister, is at Union Saint-Gilloise and has played a big role this year at centre-back since joining this summer. He was rested for the weekend's victory but has been reintroduced for this game.

Union Saint-Gilloise starting lineup (3-5-2): Moris (GK) — K. Mac Allister, Machida, Burgess — Mastro-Montes, Lazare, Vanhoutte, Puertas, Terho — Nilsson, Amoura.
