The defending league champions from the United States and Mexico square off in the annual Campeones Cup title match as the Columbus Crew host Liga MX giants Club America in Ohio on Wednesday.

Played to decide the "Campeon de Campeones" for the year, hosts Columbus Crew are looking to become the first MLS side to win this trophy twice, having triumphed over Cruz Azul in 2021 by a 2-0 score. To date, the only club to win two Campeones Cup trophies is Tigres, who are current title holders after beating LAFC on penalties last year.

The Crew have played some extremely exciting games in recent weeks, coming off a thrilling 4-3 win over Orlando City just a few weeks after beating NYCFC 4-2.

Club America, in their first-ever Campeones Cup appearance, have seemed to rebound from their post-Leagues Cup slump with recent wins over Chivas and Atlas followed by a draw with Necaxa last time out.

Columbus Crew vs. Club America lineups & team news

Cucho Hernandez came off the bench over the weekend against Orlando City, but the Columbus star should start this match with silverware on the line.

The only player struggling with injury at the moment is Evan Bush, with the backup goalkeeper down due to a broken arm but expected to return in a few weeks.

Columbus Crew projected starting lineup (3-4-3): Schulte (GK) — Moreira, Cheberko, Amundsen — Farsi, Matan, Nagbe, Arfsten — C. Ramirez, C. Hernandez, Rossi.

The Liga MX champions are without a pair of defenders in Igor Lichnovsky and Sebastian Caceres for this match. They should have Uruguayan veteran Caceres back in a few weeks, but Lichnovsky is out until 2024 with an ACL tear.

U.S. international Alejandro Zendejas is back from his hamstring injury and should be in line to start, but right-back Israel Reyes is missing due to a muscle injury of his own, so Mexican international Kevin Alvarez should slot in, although 20-year-old Dagoberto Espinoza got the nod on the weekend.

Club America projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Malagon (GK) — Espinoza, Araujo, Juarez, Calderon — E. Sanchez, dos Santos — Zendejas, Valdes, B. Rodriguez — Martin.

Columbus Crew vs. Club America prediction, betting odds & lines

  • Score prediction: Columbus Crew 2-1 Club America

These two sides are, right now, two of the top teams in North America, and are likely to put on a show in this still new showcase competition.

Club America experienced a dip in the aftermath of the Leagues Cup, but are still a formidable opponent who will be difficult for the Crew to match up against. The great decider in this match will be location, as once again the Liga MX side will be forced to hit the road for a North American cross-country competition against a strong MLS opponent.
