Sevilla won their record seventh Europa League title thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Jose Mourinho's Roma in Budapest.

The La Liga side has never lost a UEFA Cup/Europa League final, and despite Mourinho's own impressive European final record, the unassuming Jose Luis Mendilibar edged out his old rival.

The returning Paulo Dybala smartly fired Roma into a first-half lead, and the game had a feel like one goal could decide it, similar to Roma's triumph in last season's Conference League final.

But Gianluca Mancini's own goal handed Sevilla a route back into the contest after the break as both sides settled in for a battle.

Referee Anthony Taylor was the main focal point, as he handed out a flurry of cautions, with the contest edging from regulation time into extra time.

As the nerves ramped up, neither side could force a winner, and the lottery of spot kicks inevitably unfolded, as the clock ticked past midnight.

Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept out Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez, as his teammates kept their cool from the spot, and Argentina's World Cup winning penalty taker Gonzalo Montiel slammed home his retaken effort, as the Sevilla fans flooded the Puskas Arena pitch.

Mourinho could walk away from Roma in final fall out

Despite array of talent on display for both teams at the Puskas Arena the attention was firmly focused on Mourinho before, and throughout, a high-stakes night in Budapest.

Mourinho's proud record of never losing a European club tournament final was ended by Montiel's spot kick, and in true Mourinho style, the veteran boss has already hinted his Roman adventure could be over.

After securing the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Mourinho wanted to take the next step in 2023, but narrow margins have counted against him.

His impressive two seasons in Rome have shown the fire still burns inside him, but that volatility works in both directions, and this loss could be just the start of a summer of changes at Stadio Olimpico.

Mendilibar rides the Budapest storm to debut title

Mendilibar's CV does not boast the same star quality as Mourinho's nomadic wandering around the top jobs in European football, but his disciplined and measured demeanour has got Sevilla back on track.

After dragging the club away from relegation danger in La Liga, he quickly set about reminding his squad of their status as Europa League powerhouses, capable of extinguishing Mourinho's fire.

The pressure of the night saw him rattled in the closing stages, but he refused to be dragged into Mourinho's melodrama, and stay focused on his own team.

His only previous trophy came as a Segunda Division title winner with Real Valladolid in 2007, but his contrast and belief in the experience of Ivan Rakitic, Bono and Lamela, brought its reward.

Bono inspires Sevilla with World Cup rewind

Bono played a crucial role in Morocco's march to the 2022 World Cup semifinals and the 32-year-old showed his class and composure again.

An early save from Leonardo Spinazzola settled him, and despite conceding from Dybala, his brave stops from Tammy Abraham and Andrea Belotti took the sting out of Roma, and kept Sevilla in the tie.

He developed a reputation for shootout saves in Qatar and channelled that against the tiring Roma stars including an outstanding stop from Ibanez.

A goal keeper who sets the standard breeds confidence for his teammates in a penalty shootouts and Bono lightened the load to allow Sevilla to secure European title No.7.
