Jose Mourinho will need to wait for another season to deliver another European title to Roma fans.
Roma clinched the Europa Conference League title in 2022, but they were not able to take the 2023 Europa League after losing the final on a penalty shootout against Sevilla.
The final result of the 2023 Europa League final will technically go down as a draw, but penalties awarded the trophy to Sevilla, who are the most successful side in the history of the competition.
Mourinho's vast experience was not enough to help him with the lottery that are penalty kicks as Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez both saw their shots saved by Sevilla star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Sevilla won the shootout 4-1 after a retaken Gonzalo Montiel penalty to clinch it.

Porto (4)
- 2003 UEFA Cup final: Porto 3-2 Celtic
- 2003 Taca de Portugal final: Porto 1-0 Uniao de Leiria
- 2003 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira: Porto 1-0 Uniao de Leiria
- 2004 Champions League final: Porto 3-0 Monaco
His first taste of winning finals came during his stint in charge of Porto, from 2002 to 2004, with a 3-2 UEFA Cup final victory over Martin O'Neill's Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup final.
He followed that up with immediate wins in the Taca de Portugal and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, ahead of the 2003/04 season.
Alongside two Primeira Liga titles, Mourinho's profile was catapulted to worldwide attention in the 2004 Champions League final, as his Deco-inspired team beat AS Monaco to lift the trophy.

Chelsea (5)
- 2005: League Cup final: Chelsea 3-2 Liverpool
- 2005 Community Shield: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
- 2007: League Cup final: Chelsea 1-0 Man United
- 2007 FA Cup final: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
- 2015: League Cup final: Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham
Mourinho's immediate move to the Premier League saw him upset the Manchester United and Arsenal duopoly, with successive league titles, in an incredible first two years at Stamford Bridge.
However, alongside bringing the league title to west London, Mourinho also prioritised the domestic cup competitions, with two EFL Cup titles, an FA Cup, and a Community Shield, before leaving Chelsea in September 2007.
Mourinho would eventually return to Chelsea, bringing the Premier League title back to the Bridge, with glory in 2014/15.
However, despite also winning the EFL Cup that season, his Chelsea comeback also featured his first final loss, as the Blues were defeat on penalties by Bayern in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup.
Inter Milan (3)
- 2008 Supercoppa Italiana final: Inter 2-2 Roma (Inter 6-5 on pens)
- 2010 Coppa Italia final: Inter Milan 1-0 Roma
- 2010 Champions League final: Inter Milan 2-0 Bayern Munich
After almost a year out of the game, Mourinho made the bold move to join Inter Milan, and immediately kickstarted the club.
He won two Serie A titles in a row, matching his feat at Chelsea, and led I Nerazzurri to a treble win in 2010.
Despite criticism over his playing style at the San Siro, Mourinho showed trademark indifference, as Inter beat Roma in the Coppa Italia final and followed that up with his second Champions League title, beating Bayern Munich in the final.

Real Madrid (2)
- 2011 Copa del Rey final: Real Madrid 1-0 Barcelona
- 2012 Supercopa de Espana: Real Madrid 4-4 Barcelona (away goals)
Despite finding himself up against Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Barcelona, during his time in Madrid, Mourinho refused to take a backwards step.
He finally clinched his sole La Liga title in 2012, after beating the Blaugrana in the 2011 Copa del Rey final, and wrapping up his time in the Spanish capital with a two-leg Spanish Supercopa win over his bitter foes.
Manchester United (3)
- 2016 Community Shield: Man United 2-1 Leicester City
- 2017 League Cup: Man United 3-2 Southampton
- 2017 Europa League: Man United 2-0 Ajax
Mourinho's time at Old Trafford continued the pattern of highs and lows, with trophies won, followed by a chaotic fallout triggering his exit in 2018.
Despite an often fractured relationship with the United fans, Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League with the Red Devils in 2017, with the club having to wait six years for their next trophy with Erik ten Hag

However, United also saw his worst run of luck in finals, with defeat to Chelsea in the 2017/18 FA Cup final, and Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.
Roma (1)
- 2022 Conference League final: Roma 1-0 Feyenoord
In fewer than 12 months since his arrival, Mourinho ended Roma's trophy drought since 2008, clinching the first-ever Europa Conference League title.
How many finals has Jose Mourinho lost?
Mourinho has only lost three of the 21 finals he has managed, and curiously, two of the occasions came in the UEFA Super Cup which he has yet to win in his career.
- 2013 UEFA Super Cup
- 2018 FA Cup
- 2017 UEFA Super Cup
- 2023 Europa League
Should Mourinho's Roma win the 2023 Europa League final against Sevilla, he would get another chance at the Super Cup against the winner of the 2023 Champions League (Manchester City or Inter Milan).
2013 UEFA Super Cup
- Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea
(Bayern won 5-4 on pens)
With Mourinho's Chelsea on the verge of claiming the silverware in extra time, Bayern Munich's Javi Martinez scored in stoppage to send the match to penalties, where a failed attempt by Romelu Lukaku gave the trophy to the Germans.
2018 FA Cup
- Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United
Despite dominating the match and out-shooting Chelsea by a wide margin, Mourinho's Manchester United could not overcome a 22nd minute Eden Hazard penalty. The likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, and Marcus Rashford could not find a way past Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at Wembley.
2017 UEFA Super Cup
- Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester United
It was an evenly matched Super Cup final held in Macedonia, but a goal in each half allowed Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid to overcome Mourinho's Man United, who cut it to 2-1 on a Romelu Lukaku goal, but could not find an equaliser.
2023 Europa League
- Sevilla 1-1 Roma (Sevilla win 4-1 on pens)
Roma had the ideal start by taking a first-half lead through a Paulo Dybala goal, but Sevilla made adjustments and came out strong in the second half, getting an equaliser via an own goal on a cross.
Ivan Rakitic struck the post and a Chris Smalling header smacked the crossbar, but the match went to penalties, where Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou came up with two big stops. Gonzalo Montiel, who took the winning 2022 World Cup penalty converted his penalty to win it after a retake ordered by VAR.
Jose Mourinho trophy record
