The race for European qualification in the 2022/23 Premier League season looks set to be another fascinating sub plot to the campaign.

The 2021/22 season ended with seven sides clinching a place in Europe for the upcoming season, with english representatives in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The traditional top four battle remained tight all the way until the final day of the campaign with Antonio Conte's Tottenham eventually sealing a Champions League spot.

The addition of the UEFA Europa Conference League has altered the European qualification structure within the Premier League with 2022/23 updating again.

European places in Premier League 2022/23: How many teams can qualify for Europe?

The 2022/23 Premier League season mirrors recent campaigns in providing the opportunity for seven Premier League clubs to clinch a European spot at the end of the campaign.

As per UEFA rules, the Premier League is guaranteed four Champions League placestwo Europa League places, and one Europa Conference League place.

The Champions League picture, via Premier League finishes, is relatively straightforward with the top four sides securing a place in the 2023/24 Champions League group stages.

Prior to the start of the season, fifth spot is reserved for a Europa League qualification place, with the FA Cup and EFL Cup winners given Europa League and Europa Conference spots respectively, subject to criteria.

If either cup winner secures a European place via league finish, their spot is designated to the next ranked team, with sixth place set for the Europa League, and seventh for the Europa Conference League.

How many Premier League teams are in Europe in 2022/23? Who has qualified?

Manchester City's dramatic Premier League title defence ensured another season of Champions League football for Pep Guardiola's champions in 2022/23.

Liverpool's second place finish means a chance for Jurgen Klopp to avenge their 2022 final defeat against Real Madrid, alongside Chelsea and Tottenham, in third and fourth respectively.

Arsenal will compete in the Europa League, after Mikel Arteta's side fell at the final hurdle, up against arch rivals Tottenham, to finish fifth.

Liverpool's domestic cup double continues the pattern of league placings deciding the final European qualification picture, with Erik ten Hag's Manchester United joining the Gunners, and West Ham dropping into the Europa Conference League.

What happens if an English club wins a European trophy?

The prospect of a domestic cup win disrupting the 'league path' to Europe remains a factor each season, however, the top six/seven is generally the final qualification route.

Since 2013/14, Arsenal's 2020 FA Cup triumph is the only example of a Premier League side qualifying for Europe, outside of a designated league finish.

However, the rules are expanded further if a Premier League side wins a European trophy, and fails to secure a qualifying league position.

UEFA have a tiered system in place for clubs in each European competition as a reward for winning a trophy.

The winners of the Europa Conference League receive a Europa League place for the following season - unless they qualify for the Champions League domestically - with an extra spot allotted to them.

That is mirrored in the Europa League, with a guaranteed Champions League group stage place for the winners, if they fail to secure a league route to the competition.

The Champions League winners are guaranteed a place in next season's competition, regardless of their domestic league finish, as Rafa Benitez's Liverpool famously did after beating AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005.
