Before the knockout round proper can be finalised, two-leg playoffs have to be arranged to determine the exact makeup of the round of 16.
These playoffs give teams dropping down from the Champions League a second chance at European glory and means the competition boasts some particularly strong clubs in the knockout rounds.

Europa League playoffs draw rules
The only notable rule to note for the draw is that teams from the same country cannot draw each other.
So that means the following hypothetical fixtures won't be allowed to stand if drawn out:
- PSV vs. Ajax
- Roma vs. Juventus
- Union Berlin vs. Bayer Leverkusen
This remains true in the Round of 16 draw as well, once the Europa League reaches that stage. After that, teams from the same country will be able to match up if the bracket dictates such a meeting.
