Destination Dublin has officially fallen short of the goal.
Jurgen Klopp's farewell tour at Liverpool poseed the perfect opportunity for him to bow out on top, but a European crown was not to be in his final season as the Reds fell to Atalanta 3-1 on aggregate in the quarterfinals, with a 3-0 first-leg defeat at home proving insurmountable.
The Europa League final will be held in the Republic of Ireland's capital city on May 22 and, but Liverpool will not take part, as all English clubs have been eliminated from both the Champions League and Europa League.
The 56-year-old announced in January that he was to leave the club at the end of the season after admitting his energy levels aren't quite the same after nearly nine seasons at the helm.
The Sporting News takes a look back at how the Reds fell painfully short of a potentially memorable European journey.

Are Liverpool playing in the Europa League this week?
Liverpool were convincingly beaten by Atalanta in the first leg of their quarterfinal Europa League tie by a 3-0 score, and were unable to turn it around in the second leg.
Thus, there will be no more European matches for the Reds this season, as a 1-0 victory on the road in Italy was not enough to see them turn around the tie. A 3-1 aggregate defeat to Atalanta saw them eliminated in mid-April, and thus must focus solely on the domestic campaign the rest of the way.
Liverpool Europa League schedule 2023/24
Liverpool hoped their European journey would conclude with the final in Dublin on May 22, which could have potentially been Klopp's final game in charge had the Reds made it.
Those hopes were dented at Anfield as they lost their first game at home in 33 matches to Atalanta with a 3-0 defeat. With a lot of work to do, their Europa League run came to an end as a 1-0 victory in Italy wasn't enough to turn around the aggregate deficit.

How does the 2023/24 Europa League knockout stage work?
The eight group stage winners were the seeded teams for the Europa League Round of 16, drawn against the winners of the eight playoff ties, which began on March 7, 2024.
At that point, the Europa League became a straightforward knockout competition. The team that won via aggregate score in the two-legged Round of 16 ties progress to the quarterfinals — another two-legged affair — which took place on April 11 and 18.
The quarterfinal winners advanced on to the semifinals on May 2 and 9, from which two teams will reach the final.
If scores are level after both legs, extra-time and then penalties if needed, will decide the winner.
