So you want to be an Ultimate Fighter...

Flyweight Jessica Eye suffered a gruesome cut on her forehead after a headclash in her UFC 264 prelim fight with Jennifer Maia.

Fighting on the prelims to Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier's trilogy bout, the cut was opened near the end of the second round after Eye and Maia clashed heads.

It immediately began gushing blood, and Eye's cutman had his work cut out for him.

With a huge amount of vaseline smeared into the cut, Eye fought well in the third and final round, pressing the pace in search of the win.

The vaseline held out for a few minutes, but the American finished the bout with a face covered in blood.

Adding insult to injury, Eye was on the wrong side of a unanimous decision, with scores of 29-28 29-28 and 30-27.

Maia most recently dropped a decision to Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight title last November, and believes she should get another shot at the belt soon.

"I was confident I won that fight," Maia said afterwards.

"I was one of the only fighers to take her (Shevchenko) to five rounds.

"I think one fight is enough for me to get the title shot."

It's not the only gruesome fight eye has been part of in the UFC.

In 2014, her UFC 180 bout with Leslie Smith was stopped when Smith's ear exploded from a punch.
