Lucha Underground's Netflix arrival could help reinvigorate the promotion image

If the build to WrestleMania is getting you down, you can always binge one of the most refreshingly different promotions around, starting today. Lucha Underground, which has aired three seasons on the El Rey Network out of Mexico, is now streaming both the first and second seasons on Netflix

Conceived as a serialized TV show that happens to feature wrestling, Lucha Underground quickly became a cult favorite thanks to the complex (for wrestling) storylines and charisma of on-screen owner Dario Cueto.

The show is also notable for freely mixing women and men in the ring, resulting in characters like Sexy Star rising to prominence on the show. The show was also notable for reviving the career of former WWE star John Morrison, in a new identity as Johnny Mundo, as well as signing Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio once they were released from their WWE contracts.

It's nearly impossible to do the crazy storylines featured on the show justice, but Lucha Underground features everything from an immortal monster named Mil Muertes (with a manager presumed to be hundreds of years old and possibly supernatural in origin) to top star Pentagon getting trained by the evil split personality of the color commentator.

Unfortunately, ratings have dropped steadily in the third season, so featuring the show on Netflix is a huge coup for the producers and will hopefully put some eyeballs on it, especially given the extremely limited availability of the El Rey Network. If you're a wrestling fan looking for something truly different than WWE, it's well worth the binge.

Season one features 39 episodes, and season two features 26.
