Olyroos player ratings vs. Argentina: Souttar, Deng set up great wall of Australia image

The Olyroos got their Tokyo 2020 Olympics campaign off to an unbelievable start, shocking two-time champions Argentina 2-1 in their opening match at the Sapporo Dome on Thursday night.

Australia's young stars impressed throughout the 90 minutes in a match they were a rank outsider to grab the three points.

Sporting News rates how all of the Olyroos performed against Argentina.

Thomas Glover 7

A clean sheet in the book in a commanding performance from the Melbourne City goalkeeper. Looked confident when facing set pieces and crosses.

Joel King 7

Made an excellent run before receiving Souttar's pass to assist Wales' opener. Worked hard up-and-down the left flank.

Thomas Deng 8

The Olyroos' captain put in an excellent performance at the back. Leading his team with composure.

Harry Souttar 8

An absolute man mountain in defence. Played a magnificent pass from a free kick in his own half to set up King's assist for Wales' goal.

Olyroos Argentina

Nathaniel Atkinson 7

Bombed up-and-down the right flank in the first half. Faded in the second half after a couple of heavy knocks.

Connor Metcalfe 8

An assured and controlling performance at the base of midfield. Australia has really found a player here.

Denis Genreau 7

Provided that link between the midfield and attack, while also working back hard to sit in a midfield two alongside Metcalfe.

Riley McGree 7

Nearly scored an incredible bicycle kick. Looked dangerous in attacking areas. Worked hard defensively also.

Lachlan Wales 8

Scored the opening goal by arriving in the penalty area at the perfect time. Should have had a second but fired straight at the keeper from point-blank. Used his pace to get in behind the Argentine defence.

Daniel Arzani 6

Was good to see him demanding the ball but looked off the pace and struggled to create despite several promising openings.

Mitchell Duke 8

A superb performance from the veteran of the team. Worked tirelessly. Held the ball up well. Layed on the assist for Tilio's match-sealer.
