The Matildas continue their dream of gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a crunch semi-final against Sweden in Yokohama on Monday night.

Australia secured their place in the final four with an incredible extra-time victory against Great Britain in the quarter-finals.

But their opponents Sweden are yet to lose a match in the tournament and already boast a win over the green and gold.

While Australia has never won an Olympic medal in the event, the Swedes clinched silver at the Rio 2016 games, just falling short to Germany in the final.

After twice reaching the quarter-finals, the Matildas have finally put themselves in a position to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr scored a last minute equaliser to send the quarter-final against Great Britain into extra time, before Teagan Micah's saved a penalty and goals to Mary Fowler and Kerr earned the green and gold one of their most famous wins.

But the obstacle in their path to the gold medal match is Sweden, who beat the Matildas 4-2 in their group stage meeting on July 24.

Despite the defeat, Australia missed a penalty and were well short of the best but still pushed the Swedes and were only undone by defensive lapses.

Kerr scored a magnificent brace against a compact Swedish defence but also missed a penalty in the second half, in a costly moment that may have turned the match.

She will be once again called upon to be the talisman against Sweden, a team who like to defend with numbers and strike with efficiency in attack.

Matildas squad and team news

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Sunday that Sam Kerr was a doubt to start the match against Sweden with Mary Fowler being lined up as a replacement in the starting side.

Speaking on Sunday, Tony Gustavsson confirmed he might not have a full squad to choose from and stressed his substitutes were just as important as his starters.

"I will know that for 100 per cent after this afternoon’s training. We have a few question marks," the Matildas coach said.

"We’re deep into the tournament. I want to be very clear here, and I said this before the GB game as well, it’s not just about the starting line-up, it’s about the finishing line-up as well. If you look at that GB game, we won the game with the changes coming in."
