Liverpool begin their Carabao Cup defence with an all-Premier League round-three clash against West Ham on Wednesday.

Virgil van Dijk scored in extra time to settle last season's final against Chelsea, extending the Reds' record haul of 10 successes in the competition.

“I know the history of this club,” said head coach Arne Slot, who is keen to secure the first piece of silverware of his Anfield tenure. “I know what happened last season and in a special way, with so many youngsters on the pitch in the final. I know how special winning a cup can be.

“It is not only fans who love winning trophies, players and managers do. We all love to win something but that is far away. We are aware of the fact we won it last season and are the holders of that trophy so we have to protect that [status]. We are going to give everything to win it again.”

West Ham have only taken four points from their opening five Premier League games under Julen Lopetegui and are badly in need of a morale boost.

Federico Chiesa makes his full Liverpool debut after a pair of substitute appearances since joining from Juventus, although Slot does not think the Italy international is ready for 90 minutes.

Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah were among the heroes of Wembley last season and start in defence, with Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo coming into the midfield as Slot takes the opportunity to rotate.

Caoimhin Kelleher would likely have started this game in any case and the Republic of Ireland international remains between the posts with Allison (muscular) still sidelined.

Summer signing Jean-Clair Todibo comes into the defence, behind which veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is back for domestic cup action.

West Ham (4-3-3, right to left): Fabianski (GK) — Coufal, Todibo, Kilman, Cresswell — Soler, Alvarez, Soucek — Bowen, Ings, Summerville
