NRL 2021: Five standout NSW Cup performers in round eight image

Queensland's Intrust Super Cup took a break over the weekend, but there were plenty of standouts south of the border with the New South Wales Cup in full swing.

We've had a look at the reserve grade standouts over the weekend as the Panthers consolidated their spot on top of the ladder with a seventh win from as many matches.

Western Suburbs edged out a 30-28 win over the lowly Dragons, while the Rabbitohs held off a fast-finishing Raiders outfit, North Sydney was too good for Newcastle and Mounties defeated Parramatta 34-26.

For last week's standout performers go here.

STEVEN MARSTERS - RABBITOHS

Steven Marsters was instrumental on the wing as the Rabbitohs held on for a 26-22 win over the Raiders on Saturday.

Marsters scored a double for the second week in a row, made four tackle breaks, a linebreak and an offload as the Rabbits secured their second win of 2021.

With injuries to Campbell Graham and Jaxson Paulo, Marsters is in line for an NRL call-up.

The 21-year-old played five matches for the Bunnies last season, scoring on debut in a 56-16 win over Manly.

Saturday's win also saw the Rabbitohs welcome back Braidon Burns. The centre hadn't played since suffering a shocking knee injury against the Bulldogs in round eight last season. He could also be in line for an NRL call-up as Souths host the Storm on Thusday.

BRENDAN HANDS - PENRITH PANTHERS

You could take your pick of standouts from the Panthers during the side's 52-6 demolition of Manly.

Brent Naden, Izack Tago and Taylan May all scored two tries, but Hands seemingly had a hand in everything.

After being named at hooker, Hands switched to the halves with Mitch Kenny returning, and he set up an early try for Tago from a kick.

Hands ended the afternoon with three try assists and three linebreak assists as the Panthers maintained their four-point lead at the top of the table.

SAM WILLIAMS - CANBERRA RAIDERS

Sam Williams almost conjured a remarkable second-half comeback against the Rabbitohs in Canberra.

The halfback set up the opening try of the game, and kicked a 40/20 in the opening 15 minutes before South Sydney went out to a 26-12 lead with half an hour remaining.

The halfback scored twice in the closing stages of the match to narrow the gap to four points at fulltime.

Williams finished the day with two tries, three conversions and two try assists.

LACHLAN LEWIS - MOUNTIES

Unwanted in first grade by Trent Barrett, Lachlan Lewis was in form as Mounties scored a 34-26 win over Parramatta.

The playmaker opened the scoring in the third minute when he regathered his own kick.

He was heavily involved in Mounties' next two tries as well, kicking for Declan Casey and Aaron Schoupp to take an early 18-0 lead.

Mounties held on for its fourth win of 2021, and currently sits in sixth spot on the ladder.

NAUFAHU WHYTE - NORTH SYDNEY BEARS

North Sydney claimed a reasonably comfortable 34-18 win over Newcastle, with second-rower Naufahu Whyte putting in a mountain of work.

In his third game of the season, Whyte crossed for tries in the 34th and 71st minutes, taking his season tally to four.

Whyte was damaging on attack, with two linebreaks, and busy in defence, making 35 tackles - second only to Egan Butcher for the match.

The Bears' fourth win of the season sees them maintain third place on the ladder behind the Panthers and Magpies.
