Matchday one of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League is in the books, with fans getting around the new league phase format.

In a special Friday morning edition of Champions League football we saw a few surprise results, with a heavyweight Spanish side falling to defeat, and Arsenal being held to a draw by last years Europa League winners.

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen flexed their muscles, whilst there was late drama and winners for debutants in the other matches.

The biggest result of the night was Barcelona losing to Monaco away from home, with Hansi Flick's side playing much of the match with 10-men.

Eric Garcia was given a straight red card for a last man foul just outside the box, though despite going behind they equalised through wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

A George Ilenikhena goal in the 71st minute was enough for Monaco to secure an important win against Barca, who only put up four shots in the entire match.

In Italy, Arsenal had David Raya to thank as he made an extraordinary double save from the penalty spot to deny Atalanta a win; Mateo Retegui's spotkick was saved, as was his follow up effort in the most exciting moment of a tight and tense match.

Bayer Leverkusen won 4-0 over Feyenoord in a message to the rest of the competition, whilst Atletico Madrid secured a late win over RB Leipzig thanks to Jose Gimenez.

Champions League debutants Brest were also victorious, winning 2-1 over 10-man Austrian side Sturm Graz.
