Steve Spark isn't here to make up the numbers.

The Toowoomba local, who had just seven days to prepare to fight Tszyu, is adamant on causing one of the biggest upsets in Australian boxing history.

And with a son due to be born later in the year, he has all the motivation in the world to get it done.

"I've got a baby boy due in September and a beautiful partner back home," Spark told Sporting News.

"It's another motivation behind me taking this fight. It's about me setting a good example for my son and my family."

Spark was at work pulling beers last Wednesday when he received the call from his manager Brendan Smith about the fight with Tszyu.

He didn't have to think twice, and jumped at the chance to test himself on the biggest stage in Australian boxing.

He wants his story to speak to the public more broadly.

"People can take a lot away from this. Not just in Australian boxing, but the public as well. It's about having dreams and aspirations," Spark told Sporting News.

"It's about tackling them head on and not being deterred by the task in front of you.

"I think people resonate with me and get behind me, because I'm just an average Aussie bloke having a crack at life. I think that's what it's about. That's what people like."

Spark is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jack Brubaker in April and has earned the praise of the boxing community for taking the fight with Tszyu.

Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech says the 24-year-old will pose a tougher test for Tszyu than what Zerafa would have, but Spark knows none of the talk will matter come fight night.

"My profile has been boosted tremendously, but that's what comes with the sport when you step up and take the bigger fights," he said.

"I try to block that out and put it aside. At the end of the day, I'm a boxer and that's what I do.

"None of your followers, supporters, the media, Jeff Fenech or anyone with anything to say is going to get in the ring and fight for you.

"It's up to me to go in and put all my sparring and training into practise. When you lose, you're back down again. I have to take Tim Tszyu out."

While the fallout from Zerafa's last-minute pullout continues, Spark thanked the 'Pretty Boy' for his decision, saying it gave him the opportunity to shine.

"If you want it bad enough, you'll make it happen," he said at Monday's press conference.

"That's referring to myself, Tim, and No Limit. If you want something bad enough, you'll go out and make it happen. Unlike some other fighters who aren't willing to do that.

"I'm excited to be part of the biggest event in Australian boxing this year.

"I'm so glad No Limit did call up and I'm so glad Michael Zerafa did pull out. Thank you, Michael Zerafa, it's great."
