Australian lightweight Harry Garside has secured a bronze medal after going down in his semi final against highly rated Cuban Andy Cruz on Friday.

Just by qualifying for the final four, the 24-year-old's quarter final win against Kazakhstani veteran Zafir Safiullin ensured he'd still win a medal as both semi final losers are awarded bronze in Olympic boxing.

Garside went into the semis an underdog, taking on the two-time world amateur champion, but he was carrying plenty of confidence from his quarter final victory.

Unfortunately for the Australian, Cruz proved far too good, taking out all three rounds on all five judges' scorecards, including a resounding 10-8 on two cards in the final round.

Cruz will now meet American Keyshawn Davis following his win over Armenia's Hovhannes Bachkov in the other semi.
