The first Preliminary Final of the 2024 AFL season pits the Sydney Swans against Port Adelaide Power at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 20 September.

The Swans have had a week off after beating their city rivals GWS in Week 1 of the 2024 AFL Finals series, recording a narrow 13.10 (88) points to 12.10 (82) over the Giants on home soil to book their place in this preliminary final.

Port Adelaide, meanwhile, have taken the tougher route to reach Week 3 of this year's Finals, being well beaten by Geelong on the opening weekend of action before defeating Hawthorn by the tightest of margins last time out – scoring just 11.9 (75) points to 11.6 (72) in their close-run Semi Final clash.

Sydney Swans vs. Port Adelaide AFL Finals match preview

These two sides are now just 80 minutes away from the 2024 AFL Grand Final at Melbourne Cricket Ground next weekend and will face the winner of the second Preliminary Final between Geelong and the Brisbane Lions.

Sydney have made late comebacks one of their defining traits in 2024, and their qualifying final clash with GWS was no different, scoring fewer points than the Giants in the first three quarters of the match before hitting back in the final 20 minutes with a 40-goal surge; winning it by just six points in the fourth and last quarter.

The Power, meanwhile, also went right down to the wire in their match against Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval. Port Adelaide may have maintained a slender lead throughout the four breaks in play, but they never got more than 13 points in front and were almost caught in the final quarter, edging the Hawks by just three points as the final hooter sounded.
