Gold Coast will defy the bookies odds to beat a premiership contender and keep their home record going strong.

While both Carlton and Geelong are too short in games they are favourites in.

Below are The Sporting News’ betting predictions and best bets for Round 20.

Carlton vs. Port Adelaide prediction, tip, best bet

Carlton are struggling to perform at the business end of the season and this match will be a real test.

Port Adelaide have a terrific record at Marvel Stadium and will certainly put the Blues defence to the test.

Carlton only just got over the line against North at the same venue last week and we feel they are too short versus the Power.

Back the Power at the line with the match likely to go down to the wire.

Prediction: Carlton by 5 points

Best bet: Port Adelaide +14.5 ($1.90)

North Melbourne vs. Geelong prediction, tip, best bet

North Melbourne have been much improved in recent weeks and they host the Cats at Marvel Stadium.

There is no doubt the Kangaroos have played their best football under the roof and there is no reason why they can't keep the game close.

Geelong showed they can't be trusted after being thrashed by the Bulldogs at home last week.

While we would stop short of backing North to win, the line gives quite a bit of leeway.

Prediction: Geelong by 12 points

Best bet: North Melbourne +24.5 ($1.90)

Gold Coast vs. Brisbane prediction, tip, best bet

Gold Coast are yet to lose at home this season, but they are underdogs against Brisbane.

The Lions have been much improved but have a decimated defence with six tall defenders injured - including Harris Andrews, Jack Payne and Darcy Gardiner.

The Suns tall forwards can get off the chain as they will have undersized match-ups or forwards as opponents, with Eric Hipwood mentioned as a possible emergency defender.

Brisbane's win against Sydney was excellent on paper but the fact they struggled to put away a team with three injured players at home says they aren't fully up-and-about at the moment.

All the information points the Suns being considerable value to win as the underdog.

Prediction: Gold Coast by 9 points

Best bet: Gold Coast to win ($2.20)
